5 Fall Lawn Care Tips to Keep Your Waco Yard Healthy All Winter

Fall is one of the most important, and most overlooked, seasons for lawn care in Central Texas. The cooler days are easier on both grass and homeowners, but what you do, or skip, in October and November sets the stage for how your lawn looks next spring. Whether you're maintaining St. Augustine, Bermuda, or Zoysia grass, these five fall lawn care steps will help your Waco yard stay healthy through the winter months and bounce back strong once warm weather returns.

1. Keep Mowing, But Raise the Blade

Grass growth slows as temperatures drop, but it doesn't stop entirely in Central Texas. Continue mowing through fall, raising your mower deck slightly higher than your summer height. Taller grass blades protect the crown of the plant and help the lawn hold onto moisture and warmth as nights get cooler.

2. Aerate Compacted Soil

Waco's clay-heavy soil compacts easily, especially in yards that saw heavy foot traffic or summer drought stress. Core aeration in the fall relieves that compaction, letting water, air, and nutrients reach the root zone before winter dormancy sets in. It's also an ideal time to overseed thin or bare patches if you're working with a cool-season blend.

3. Fertilize With the Right Blend

Skip high-nitrogen green-up fertilizers in the fall. Instead, choose a fertilizer blend higher in potassium, which helps strengthen roots and improves cold tolerance heading into winter. A late-fall feeding, typically in November, gives warm-season grasses like St. Augustine and Bermuda the nutrients they need to survive dormancy and recover quickly in spring.

4. Stay on Top of Leaves

A thick layer of fallen leaves left sitting on the lawn blocks sunlight and traps moisture against the grass, which can lead to fungal issues and dead patches by spring. Rake or mulch leaves regularly through the season rather than waiting for them all to fall at once, and keep storm drains and drainage areas clear so heavy fall rains don't pool in your yard.

5. Adjust Your Watering Schedule

As temperatures cool, lawns need significantly less water than they did during the summer. Most Waco yards can cut back irrigation frequency, watering only when the soil is dry a couple of inches down. Overwatering in cooler weather encourages fungal growth and does little for a lawn that's heading into dormancy anyway.

A Little Fall Effort Goes a Long Way

None of these tasks require a huge time investment, but together they make a real difference in how quickly, and how well, your lawn bounces back each spring.
